Start with a bounded business task

Consider an agent that reads a support request, finds relevant order information and drafts a reply. Start with read access and a draft for a person to approve. Sending messages, issuing refunds or changing customer records are separate capabilities. Do not grant all of them simply because the model can describe those actions.

Give each tool a clear contract

MCP connects AI applications to capabilities exposed by servers, including tools and resources. A custom MCP server can offer a focused operation such as looking up an order instead of unrestricted database access. Define input fields, output structure, permission checks and error responses. The business system must enforce authorization; a helpful tool description is not an access control.

Plan approvals and retries

Distinguish reading, preparing a change and committing it. Require confirmation where the workflow needs a human decision. When a tool times out, the agent should not assume nothing happened. Use a request identifier and a way to check the result before retrying a write. Store enough execution history to explain an action without logging credentials or unnecessary personal data.

Evaluate the workflow, not the demonstration

Test ambiguous requests, unavailable tools and unexpected data. Check whether the agent stops when it lacks permission, asks for missing information and reports partial completion honestly. Devoholic offers agentic agents, custom MCP servers, API integrations and workflow automation. We scope the tools and checkpoints around the actual task before increasing autonomy.

Before you begin

  • A bounded task and allowed systems
  • Narrow tools with server-side permissions
  • Human checkpoints for consequential changes
  • Retry behaviour, result checks and workflow evaluation

Tell us which repetitive workflow you want to improve. We can work out where an agent helps, what tools it needs and where a person should stay involved.
